Oklahoma Innovation Goes Global: Linear Health Sciences Partners with NIPRO to Enter the Japanese Market
When we invest in a company, we’re betting on a moment like this one.
Our portfolio company, Linear Health Sciences, has announced a strategic partnership with NIPRO CORPORATION, a leading Japanese medical device manufacturer, to bring Linear’s flagship product, the Orchid Safety Release Valve (SRV), to hospitals across Japan, beginning July 22, 2026.
It’s a milestone worth pausing on. Not just for Linear, but for what it represents about the kind of innovation coming out of this region.
A Problem Worth Solving
Linear’s technology addresses a deceptively simple but costly problem in healthcare: unintentional IV catheter dislodgement. It sounds minor until you look at the numbers, this single issue accounts for over $2 billion in preventable waste across U.S. healthcare systems every year, not to mention the patient harm and clinical disruption it causes.
The Orchid SRV solves this with an elegantly simple mechanism: a tension-activated valve that safely disconnects before excessive force can dislodge a catheter. It’s the kind of solution that’s easy to underestimate until you understand how much friction it removes from clinical care — fewer injuries, fewer interruptions to treatment, and less strain on already-stretched healthcare teams.
Why Japan, Why Now
Japan represents a particularly meaningful next step for Linear. The country’s aging population has placed sustained pressure on its healthcare infrastructure, and its regulatory environment has responded in kind: the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare has pushed guidelines that favor safer clinical practices, and FY2026 reimbursement updates now actively incentivize hospitals to adopt preventive measures like the Orchid SRV.
Under the terms of the agreement, established in March 2026, NIPRO holds exclusive rights to market and distribute the Orchid SRV throughout Japan. NIPRO’s scale and distribution strength give Linear something that’s hard to build from scratch: a fast, credible path into one of the world’s most demanding and safety-conscious healthcare markets.
As Linear CEO Deon Miller put it: “This partnership represents a significant milestone in our mission to deliver advanced, reliable, and patient-focused solutions to healthcare providers in Japan… The opportunity NIPRO provides us will open many doors for global expansion.”
What This Means for the Plains Ventures Thesis
We invest in early-stage companies across Oklahoma and the surrounding region because we believe the next generation of category-defining companies doesn’t have to come from the coasts. Linear is a proof point.
This partnership didn’t happen by accident. It’s the product of a founding team that built durable, differentiated technology, proved it out domestically, and is now scaling it internationally through the right commercial partner. That’s the trajectory we look for when we back a company: real clinical value, a defensible product, and a team ready to execute at scale.
Watching Linear take this step into the Japanese market is exactly the kind of outcome that reinforces why we do this work: investing in the businesses being built right here, and helping them compete anywhere in the world.
Congratulations to the entire Linear Health Sciences team. We’re proud to be along for the ride.
